become part of history

Founded in 1827, the Australian Museum (AM) is the nation’s foremost scientific research, educational and cultural organisation. In 1857, the AM’s Long Gallery opened its doors to the people of Sydney as the first museum in Australia.

The AM embarked on an ambitious journey to restore this iconic space to its deserved place as the nation’s premier gallery. Featuring 200 Treasures of the Australian Museum, the gallery showcases treasures from the AM’s world-class collection with an emphasis on storytelling, knowledge and understanding of the world around us.

The exhibition was guest curated by Dr Peter Emmett, a leading curator with over 30 years’ experience working with diverse collections from major institutions around the world. Digital multi-platform content such as videos, podcasts, mobile apps and education material accompany the exhibition, bringing the stories of these incredible treasures to life and making this exhibition accessible to a global audience of all ages.

This project was jointly funded by Westpac, the NSW Government and donors, and saw the restored gallery re-open as the Westpac Long Gallery in 2017 to celebrate the AM’s 190th anniversary.

We invite you to become a part of history as a member of the Treasures Circle and support this landmark project through pledging your support for one of the priceless treasures or collection cases..

Become a part of history and join us to support the ‘must see’ gallery in Australia, telling the stories of our nation and region.
